| Kayaking, like snorkeling, is an activity that allows students to experience the ocean in a fun, interactive and informative manner. The kayaks we use are the popular sit on top, plastic style and do not require previous experience or skill to use. In fact, since most students have not kayaked before, they are usually impressed with how quickly they learn to control and maneuver the kayak. As a result, this activity is a quick confidence builder, enhancing their self-esteem. Our kayaking activities are conducted in our calm bays and along the shoreline of the island. Instructors take advantage of the many ‘teachable moments’ along the way, such as kelp beds, island geology, bald eagles, island history and seals and sea lions. Students learn using all their senses in a dynamically fun manner. Again, as with all of our activities, safety is of paramount concern. All kayakers wear life jackets and Instructors give the group well defined boundaries for the activity. In addition, a chase boat shadows the group and is in radio contact with all instructors and the camp should anyone require assistance.
