Sailing and The Toyon Bay Yacht Club

Catalina Island provides some of the most spectacular sailing in California!

At Catalina Sea Camp, our Toyon Bay Yacht Club (TBYC) offers a range of courses for all sailors, from beginner to advanced.

Campers can learn and advance their skills on Laser and Laser II boats. More experienced sailors can sail on Hobie 16 and Hobie 18 Catamarans and learn and practice racing techniques on our Bigger Boats. Throughout all courses, campers set-up, launch, skipper and crew their own boats. They really learn by doing.

The Toyon Bay Yacht Club is its own community within camp. Sailors all participate in a fun initiation where they take an oath and choose "Sea Names" as they become life-long members. The TBYC provides a number of social events during the course of the session, including the famous "Dawn Drumming" to summon the wind!

Course 141: Basic Sailing I

Basic Sailing is the class for those Sea Campers who know little (or nothing at all) about sailing, but who want to learn. You'll be taught the basics of sailing in our Laser dinghies until you, too, can ride the wind!

1 Class Period

Course 142: Basic Sailing II

If you've had Basic Sailing and are ready to master the techniques of sailing the exciting Laser, this is the course for you. You will review the basics and then be introduced to some intermediate level skills. Prerequisite: Basic Sailing I or other similar introductory sailing course.

1 Class Period

Course 143: Peanut's Fleet and You

Get to know your favorite small boat on a new level. This class is intended for sailors that want to learn more about our boats. Learn safe maintenance procedures from the use of common tools to sanding and glassing. Replace worn out standing and running rigging. Come join the TBYC staff in maintaining the fleet. Prerequisite: Basic Sailing I and II

1 Class Period

Course 143: Intermediate Sailing

If you already know how to run, reach, tack, and jibe, then you'll want to sign up for Intermediate Sailing. Here you will sail, sail, and sail some more, gaining experience and expertise aboard the Laser II. These boats are equipped with main, jib, and spinnaker and offer sailors a chance to hone their skills. Prerequisite: Completion of Basic Sailing I and II or equivalent.

1 Class Period.

Course 144: Racing Tactics

Learn a new style of sailing ...Racing Tactics! Be the first person across the start line in the best position to round the first mark. Read the wind and use it to your advantage. Learn how to roll tack, pop the chute, fly wing on wing, and win the race! Confused? Racing tactics will introduce you to new skills, lingo and a new way of sailing. Prerequisite: Intermediate Sailing

2 Class Periods.

Course 145: Introduction to Coastal Cruising

Scheduled for entire afternoon sessions (6 three-hour classes). This course allows sailors an introduction to sailing in the clear breezes outside of Long Point on larger sailboats. Explore the Island and experience the finest sailing in the Catalina Channel while learning navigation, anchoring, spinnaker techniques, and more. Prerequisite: Intermediate sailing. Minimum age 14.

2 Class Periods.

Course 146: Advanced Sailing

Bring something home from your summer - official certification from the American Sailing Association as a Keel Boat sailor! This course features maximum stick time along with theory and technique. Graduate to bigger boats while building your confidence. Students required to purchase the American Sailing Association manual: Sailing Fundamentals. Prerequisite: Intermediate Sailing or equivalent. Minimum age 15.

2 Class Periods.

Course 147: Catamaran Sailing

Sail 16' and 18' Hobie Cats and the new Nacra 19' racing catamaran! Fly the hull, hike out on the trapeze, and skim over the swells on a multi hull! Learn the art of performance cat sailing and safety. Catamaran Sailing gets you close to the source on Hobie and Nacra boats as you rotate between skipper and crew. Prerequisite: Completion of Basic Sailing I and II or equivalent. This is an intermediate level class.

1 Class Period.

Course 148: Mariner's Tool Chest

Become a real sailor. Fix a ripped sail, splice an anchor line, mouse a shackle, tie a carricks bend. Use a marlinspike and sewing palm. Rely on yourself and create your own mariner's tool chest.

1 Class Period.
